How to Use Formoterol & Budesonide Respules (Foracort) 2ml?

  • The drug is intended for inhalation through the nebulizer only; it cannot be swallowed or used parenterally.
  • Inhalation from a standard jet nebulizer driven by an air compressor under your healthcare provider’s directions.
  • The respule should be taken out of the protective pouch right before its use.
  • Open respule and dispense the prescribed volume into the nebulizer chamber.
  • Throw out any unneeded part of an open respule instead of saving it for the next treatment session.
  • Take the drug normally inhaling it through the mouthpiece or mask till the end of the procedure.
  • Rinse mouth with water after each session of inhalation to avoid development of the fungal infection in mouth associated with budesonide inhalation.

Usage / Indications

Foracort Respules manufactured by Cipla Limited combine budesonide, inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), and formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Two 2 mL respules with budesonide in strengths of 0.5 mg and 1 mg plus formoterol 20 mcg are available from Cipla.

Indications for the use of Foracort Respules include regular therapy for asthma patients requiring combination of ICS and long-acting bronchodilator. The drug may also be recommended for maintenance treatment of moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in symptomatic patients with exacerbations. While budesonide decreases the inflammation in airways, formoterol relaxes muscles and improves air flow.

If the symptoms persist or there is no improvement in the condition after use of the medicine, contact your healthcare provider.

Missed Dose:

Take Formoterol and Budesonide Respules (Foracort 2ml) as prescribed by your doctor.

Do not use this Foracort 2ml for durations shorter or longer than suggested.

Whether you have missed or forgot to take the dose, then you can take it as soon as you remember it.

When it is almost time for the next dose, then you can skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.

Usual Dosage

Depends on individual patient's condition, age, weight, organ function and treatment effectiveness.

Foracort Respules 0.5 mg is reported by Cipla as a respule containing budesonide 0.5 mg and formoterol 20 mcg in 2 mL volume, while Foracort Respules 1 mg are presented as respules containing budesonide 1 mg and formoterol 0.2% in 2 mL volume.

According to the drug's prescribing information released by the manufacturer, Foracort Respules 0.5 mg and 1 mg are used for inhalation by adults patients with asthma once per day in doses of one respule depending on patient's requirements. In case of COPD, one respule of Foracort Respules 1 mg is prescribed for inhalation twice a day. Dose of formoterol higher than 40 mcg is not advisable to use along with this drug.

There is no interchangeability between Foracort Respules 0.5 mg and 1 mg; dose conversion from Foracort inhalers or Rotacaps to the nebulized solution cannot be done directly. The decision of optimal dose is to be made by the physician according to individual needs.

Drug Interactions

As the main route of elimination of budesonide is the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin and others are known to increase the systemic exposure to budesonide.

The interaction between formoterol and beta-blockers, MAOIs, tricyclics, medicines affecting the rhythm of the heart beat and diuretics is possible. Combination of Foracort with any LABA drug increases the risk of excess of beta2-agonistic effect and is undesirable.
