What Is Macitentan Tablets 10mg (Opsutan)?

Macitentan Tablets 10mg (Opsutan) is a prescription drug useful for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension or high Blood Pressure in the vessels.

These blood vessels carry the blood from the heart to the lungs.

These are significant options for helping to delay the disease progression and even improve quality of life.

The opsutan tablet is available with a combination of various medicines.

These medications need to be taken with or even without food.

Opsutan medicine needs to be used regularly to get full benefit.

Doctors would suggest the appropriate dosage for improving the symptoms.

Normally, opsutan 10 mg contains Macitentan, and this belongs to the Group of Medicines called the Endothelin Receptor Antagonists.

These medicines are used with many other medicines for treating pulmonary hypertension in adults.

It is a condition which occurs commonly due to the higher high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries or blood vessels carrying the blood from the heart to the lungs.

Normally, the Macitentan Tablets 10mg (Opsutan) will not be given to patients who are allergic to the Macitentan or Soya.

The medication is also not prescribed for patients who have higher levels of Liver enzymes in the blood.

How Does Macitentan Tablets 10mg (Opsutan) Work?

Macitentan Tablets 10mg is widely called as Endothelin Receptor Blocker. The medication works by blocking the action of endothelin.

The endothelin is a substance that causes the blood vessels carrying the blood to the lungs to get narrow or constrict.

Narrowing of the blood vessels would increase pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs.

Taking the macitentan helps the patient to relax blood vessels along with easily increasing the supply of blood for the lungs.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension or PAH can cause shortness of tiredness, dizziness, breath, swelling in ankles and legs and chest pain.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension can be caused by thickening of the walls of arteries.

The arteries supply the lungs with the blood, so the PAH causes the blood vessels to narrow. Taking the macitentan 10 mg helps to relax the blood vessels easily.

These are also helpful for lowering the blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

It is easier for the patients to carry out their daily activities more effectively and feel less dizzy.

The Macitentan Tablets 10mg (Opsutan) works with blocking the action of the endothelin hormone.

The endothelin hormone is a chemical causing vasoconstriction, and this leads to the relaxing and widening of the blood vessel walls.

It results in a reduced range of blood pressure in blood vessels.

Lowering blood pressure automatically can be useful for reducing dizziness and tiredness.

Macitentan Tablets 10mg is a spectacular option for treating pulmonary hypertension in the affected individuals.

Taking the exact dose is essential for getting the complete effect of the medicine to work in the body.

Usage / Indications

Macitentan (Opsutan) is a medication which contains the active substance macitentan - endothelin receptor antagonist intended for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO group 1) in adults. The disease is characterized by development of high blood pressure in blood vessels conducting blood from the heart to the lungs. Macitentan is used for reduction of risk of disease progression and hospitalization due to PAH.

Macitentan reduces the effects of endothelin-1 by blockage of receptors ETAs and ETB which participate in development of pulmonary vasoconstriction and abnormalities of structure of blood vessels. This effect allows reducing of pulmonary vascular resistance and improve blood circulation in lungs.

Macitentan requires special caution regarding embryo-fetal toxicity and cannot be used in pregnancy.

If the symptomatology is not relieved or does not show expected improvement consult your doctor.

Drug Interaction

Strong CYP3A4 inducers (rifampin, etc.) may considerably decrease the level of macitentan and reduce its activity. It is recommended not to combine strong enzyme inducers and macitentan. Other strong enzyme inducers may produce the same effects.

Strong inhibitors of CYP3A4 enzymes (ketoconazole, ritonavir and others) may increase the level of macitentan and increase risks of undesirable effects. The combinations of such drugs and macitentan should be avoided according to official prescribing information of the drug in USA.

Concomitant use of medicines inhibiting simultaneously both CYP3A4 and CYP2C9 enzymes may lead to considerable increasing of macitentan level. Such drugs as fluconazole and amiodarone are examples of them. Concurrent use of moderate inhibitors of both enzyme systems or concurrent use of moderate inhibitors of CYP3A4 and CYP2C9 should be avoided.

Herbal medicine St. John's wort due to its enzyme inducing properties may reduce the levels of macitentan and needs discussion with healthcare provider.
