Usage / Indications

Rifagut is a rifaximin-based antibacterial agent of the rifamycin class, which exerts an antibacterial effect in the gut. Based on the officially approved rifaximin product labeling, rifaximin can be used for the treatment of travelers' diarrhea due to non-invasive E. coli strains in adults and patients 12 years old or above, for risk reduction of recurrent overt hepatic encephalopathy in adults, and for patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Rifaximin affects RNA polymerase in bacteria, thus preventing the RNA synthesis in them. Being hardly absorbed into the systemic circulation, rifaximin is mostly effective in the intestine. Depending on the indication, the effects may be achieved with the resolution of appropriate bacteriologic travelers' diarrhea, a decrease in recurrence rate of hepatic encephalopathy or an improvement in the symptoms of IBS-D.

Consult your healthcare provider in case of persistent signs or lack of expected efficacy of the medicine.
