Usage / Indications

Entavir contains entecavir, an antiviral drug that belongs to the class of nucleoside analogues. It is used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The drug is used for the treatment of adults and children aged 2 years and older who are infected with the hepatitis B virus with signs of active replication of the virus and persistent increases in transaminases levels or active liver disease.

By inhibiting the HBV reverse transcriptase entecavir stops the replication of viral DNA in the cells. In this way, it reduces the viral load in the body and prevents further liver injury. Entecavir does not cure hepatitis B, and it cannot prevent such complications as cirrhosis or development of liver cancer.

Contact your physician if you do not feel well and the medicine gives no results.

Missed Dose:

Do not take more or less of Entecavir than prescribed. Do not stop taking it, even for a short time, unless directed by your doctor. You need to take the missed dosage as soon as you remember on an empty stomach.

When it is close to the next dosage time then you can skip the missed dosage and take the regular time.

Missed doses may cause the amount of virus to increase, which makes infection difficult to treat (resistant).

Overdose:

Overdosing of the medicine can create more side effects in the body. You must not take two doses at the extra doses or the same time.

When you have accidentally overdosed on the medicine, then you need to consult the doctor immediately.

Usual Dosage

Dosage depends on your condition, weight, organ function and reaction to the medication.

According to official data, 0.5 mg once a day is prescribed for adults and adolescents aged 16 years old and older with compensated liver disease without prior treatment with nucleoside inhibitors. The daily dose for patients with resistance of the HBV to lamivudine and some particular lamivudine or telbivudine resistance mutations or in case of decompensated liver disease is 1 mg.

Weight-based dosing is administered to patients aged 2 years old and older, with treatment-naïve dosing of 0.015 mg/kg once daily with the maximal dose 0.5 mg and larger doses are prescribed to patients having particular lamivudine resistance experience. Dosage modification is required for the patients with the creatinine clearance less than 50 mL/min. There is usually no need for dosage adjustment only in case of the impairment of the hepatic function.

Your doctor will determine the best dose for your condition.
